Tennis camps at Dawson provide an exciting and challenging environment for all ages and levels of participants. The program incorporates an effective balance between stroke fundamentals, drills, competitive strategies, fun and games, and team spirit. Through structured practices, matches, and physical and mental conditioning, campers will learn the value of performing at their highest level. Campers will be grouped according to age and ability with a low student-to-coach ratio. The morning session will consist of drills and court positioning tactics, with the afternoon devoted to match play (or a version of match play for younger, less experienced players.) Both serve as a nice balance to acquiring and nurturing a passion and appreciation for the sport while developing the skills to last a lifetime. The Dawson Girls Volleyball camp is designed to develop fundamental volleyball skills and provide players with real game experience. Players will work on refining their technique for passing, serving, setting, hitting and defense. The program will include a variety of skill sessions, games, drills, scrimmages and tournament situations. On the final afternoon of the week, we will have an Olympic volleyball tournament. In the Dawson Jewelry Making Camp, students will have the opportunity to create silver rings, earrings and necklaces, while learning the elements of basic jewelry making. In addition, campers will learn the “lost” art of wax casting, a method developed in Ancient Egypt. The lost wax casting process involves creating a wax model which is then suspended in a metal flask. A plaster-like material called investment is poured over the model. The invested flask is then placed in a kiln, and the wax model is slowly melted out until only the negative cavity, the exact shape of the original, remains. Molten metal (silver) is then vacuumed into this negative space and allowed to cool and solidify. The metal piece is removed from the plaster. Sprues (the bump at the opening where the molten metal was poured into the mold) are cut and ground. Various polishing media are used to bring the piece to its final polished state.

Make 'Em Laugh is an improvisational comedy class. Campers will work on improvisational games and mask work that will emphasize group work. The Dawson Photography Camp is designed to provide students with a foundation in traditional photography. The first day of the week will be spent taking pictures (field trips are planned) and developing negatives. You will then move into the darkroom to create prints. No experience is necessary, but campers with experience are welcome. A 35 mm camera is needed for this camp. Dawson School has a limited number of cameras it can provide on a first-come first-served basis.

Come spend an intensive week in the Dawson woodshop. The emphasis of this camp is on design, the study of materials and processes and the safe use of tools and machines. The production of a curved top hardwood trunk will introduce campers to the skills of joinery, project planning, finishing, building and design. Repeat campers will build a Shaker-style night table. The camp will employ a wide array of instructional techniques including: lecture, demonstrations, one-on-one instruction, group and individual discussion and primarily hands-on experiential learning. Dawson All Sports camp is an exciting week-long experience covering many different sports venues. This co-ed camp will use all the facilities on Dawson’s beautiful campus. In addition, an athletic development program will enhance camper's skills in areas such as flexibility, speed, strength, agility, coordination, reaction, balance & ambidexterity. Hip Hop is a very intense, high energy, pulsating dance that builds balance, strong muscles and endurance. In warm-up, students dance and learn the beat. In across-the-floor dance movement, they pop, lock, drop, glide, turn, body roll and do freestyle funk. Then we put the dance moves together into a Hip Hop routine! The Dawson Juniors Only Camp is a program created specifically for 5 and 6-year-olds. The camp is offered in weekly sessions and combines many elements into an active and safe experience. During the day, campers will be involved in the following activities: soccer, kickball, basketball, camp games, playground time, story time, nature appreciation, swimming, song and dance and arts and crafts. Campers will be evaluated as to swimming ability and will be strictly regulated according to their ability in the pool. Camp size will be limited in order to maintain a low camper-to-counselor ratio.The goal of this camp is for youngsters to feel safe and enjoy themselves in an active program. Hola Amigos! The Dawson Spanish Camp will provide students with an exciting opportunity to learn and reinforce basic Spanish vocabulary and conversational skills. This will be accomplished through music, dance, games and art activities. In addition to our language study, we will also learn about several different Latin American countries by focusing on cultural, native traditions of songs, dances and food. The goal of the Spanish camp is for the students to learn basic conversational Spanish and to leave with a better understanding of Latin American culture.

Communication in our everyday lives requires public speaking skills on a number of levels. You need to be able to persuade, inspire, explain, provoke, and pacify our friends, families, schools, and communities in order to shape the world in which we live. In this program, students will begin learning how public-speaking skills can be fun as well as useful. Storytelling, debate, solo-acting, oratory, and impromptu-speaking activities will give students a chance to practice and develop their communication skills. Students should gain confidence, skill, and enjoyment as they develop their communications repertoire.

Students will explore Boulder Creek from the high country to the plains. Each day we will travel to a different section and observe the riparian habitat, collect water samples, survey the macro-invertebrates living on the bottom and measure the velocity and discharge of the water. This will require students to hike short distances to the creek carrying sampling equipment and waders.The students will learn how to identify macro-invertebrate species and use this information to determine water quality. In the science lab the students will learn how to analyze the water samples to determine the levels of dissolved oxygen, hardness, alkalinity and pH. Students will make a computer presentation of there data along with digital pictures of the study sites. This will allow them to show the changes in water quality as the creek flows from the mountains to the plains.

This camp is designed to encourage student's exploration of visual art through a variety of different mediums from paper and fabric to clay and tooling foil. Students will be creating projects which will provide some art skills in areas such as drawing, painting, embossing, weaving and sculpture. The students will be challenged artistically with different levels of project formulation based on age and individual ability. Student's artwork will be taken home by the end of each week. All art materials needed for art production, from clay and glazes to various papers, fabrics and paints, are included in the cost of the camp.

Dawson All Sports camp is an exciting week-long experience covering many different sports venues. This co-ed camp will have an extended day ( 9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.) and will use all the facilities on Dawson’s beautiful campus. Quality instruction and competition will be provided for the following sports: soccer, basketball, flag football, tennis, volleyball, swimming, frisbee, softball, lacrosse, track and numerous other activities. In addition, an athletic development program will enhance camper's skills in areas such as flexibility, speed, strength, agility, coordination, reaction, balance and ambidexterity. Children will go home happy and tired after a long day of fun and exciting activities! A typical day will start with athletic development, followed by groups rotating through different sports stations. During lunch there will be some free time at the pool or in the gyms. The afternoons will consist of the dog patch Olympics competition, special events and other activities. A light snack will be provided midway through each afternoon. On Thursday we will have a special all-camp cookout followed by large group games. Thursday’s session will end at 7 p.m.

After camp is available on a daily basis to offer extended care for our campers who can't be picked up at the end of the regular camp schedule. Longmont Theater Company has two workshops for young thespians during the summer. One workshop is for younger children, while the second workshop is for older students. Both workshops will culminate in public performances of their shows. Children who will be entering grades 1-6 are welcome in the morning from 9:00 to 12:00 p.m. weekdays to study acting, stage craft,costumes, properties,producing, and presenting a play. Students who are entering grades 6 - 12 are welcome from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. for a similar course of study with more technical and advanced components. Kayaking is a great sport to help kids grow up strong and healthy. Kayak course just for kids The Renaissance Adventure Guides is offering kayak courses just for kids. The Kids Kayak Day Camp is a two, three or five-day program that will progress through the basics of kayaking. Kids will spend two days on a reservoir learning basic paddle strokes, bracing, self-rescue, Eskimo rescues, and the Eskimo roll. Once the basic strokes are learned we will play kayak games developed by the crew at the RAGuides. The games are fun and improve paddling skills. Lunch will need to be brought to this class. Lunch will be followed by soccer, kickball, volleyball, and whatever other fun games we want to play before getting back in the water. Our three and five day camps progress to the river after the lake portion is complete. On the river, the kids will learn how to control their boat in current and to maneuver from one part of the river to another. Maneuvers include: in and out of eddies, ferries across the river, surfing waves and negotiating a slalom course. We will encourage teamwork, respect for the river, and self-reliance. River safety, scouting, self-rescue, and reading whitewater will be practiced throughout the class. Your kids will learn how to respect the rivers and have fun at the same time. What Rivers? We have several options of rivers to paddle this summer. The rivers include Boulder Creek in Boulder, Clear Creek in Golden, St. Vrain in Lyons and the South Platte River in Denver. Each of these rivers will be utilized depending on water levels. The meeting place each day will depend on which river we are running. The Guides The river guides at the RAGuides are all ACA certified kayak instructors. They are trained in CPR, first aid and river rescue. The guides are experienced whitewater kayakers and love to spread knowledge on to others. We want to encourage young paddlers to lead the sport into the next generation.

Kris Dillon has been artistically inclined since she started finger painting with strained peas. She was slightly older than that when she took an interest in gardening. Kris’ art has been in many local shows. She also creates metal sculptures, including copper fountains. She was one of the founding members of Longmont’s Second Start Community Garden and has helped people with garden designs and solutions from Morrison to Fort Collins.

Myths and Legends! Knights and Ladyes, life in the European Middle Ages! And a real European Knight in full garb! All the heraldry here for your children to see, feel, touch and experience! We will guide you back in time and give unto all the knowledge of what once was, and where most of our culture originated. Farmers, Clergy, Scriptor, Squires, Pages,. Dames, Ladyes, Knights, Counts, Dukes, Kings, Hunters and Craftsmen. The children will assume the roles and dawn the garb of the folk of yore and interactively relive the ancient societies of medieval Europe. Armour and amour, chainmail and costumery, ceremony and shields, pavilions and banners, swords and helmets, longbows and even a children's training-joust. Children will enjoy the training and activities of the folk of medieval Europe during the week, such as kid's archery, calligraphy with real quills, paper costume making, children's 'ring' jousting and a little rubber-sword play, medieval dance, and much more. The camp will be mostly outdoors with historical tents and tournaments, and maybe a knighting to reward a good deed.

The Dawson Creative Writing Camp is designed to guide students through the processes of organizing thoughts, picking out topics, limiting the scope and defining the audience. Student authors will create several short stories, experiment with poetry, increase their vocabulary and share their work with other young writers. Here, participants will gain confidence as authors as they incorporate writing practices that enhance creative work not only in the academic setting, but also throughout their lives.The afternoons will be designed to allow student authors to delve more deeply and creatively with their writing processes. In the Dawson Jewelry Making Camp, students will have the opportunity to create silver rings, earrings and necklaces, while learning the elements of basic jewelry making. In addition, campers will learn the “lost” art of wax casting, a method developed in Ancient Egypt. The lost wax casting process involves creating a wax model which is then suspended in a metal flask. A plaster-like material called investment is poured over the model. The invested flask is then placed in a kiln, and the wax model is slowly melted out until only the negative cavity, the exact shape of the original, remains. Molten metal (silver) is then vacuumed into this negative space and allowed to cool and solidify. The metal piece is removed from the plaster. Sprues (the bump at the opening where the molten metal was poured into the mold) are cut and ground. Various polishing media are used to bring the piece to its final polished state

Unicorn Ranch summer camp offers a total horse experience. We focus on safety, on learning riding skills and proper horse care.
